6 reasons to fall in love with Scandinavia

Scandinavia, typically including Norway, Sweden and Denmark, depicts the large peninsula reaching west from northern Europe over the north side of the Baltic Sea.  Scandinavia is a beautiful part of the world, known for amazing scenery, flavoursome food and being home to some of the world’s happiest countries makes some amazing reasons to visit Scandinavia!

Not only can you explore beautiful wilderness, the cities are interesting, clean and fascinating. All in all, there’s a lot to love about Scandinavia and it’s a popular destination which you should visit at least once. Let’s look at six top reasons:

Amazing scenery in Scandinavia

In Scandinavia, wherever you go, you can immerse yourself in nature. In Norway, you’ve got Jotunheimen National Park, with 60 glaciers and 275 summits over 2,000m, to explore as well as iconic well-photographed spots such as the Pulpit Rock. One of the most beautiful places in Sweden is Sijan lake, covering an expansive 137 square miles and surrounded by lush green forests. What’s more, it’s only the country’s sixth largest lake.

In Denmark, there’s a notable UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Wadden Sea. According to Destination Tips, it’s the world’s largest unbroken system of intertidal sand and mud flats. The tidal channels, sandy shoals, sea-grass meadows, mussel beds, estuaries, beaches and dunes are home to mammals such as the harbour seal, grey seal and harbour porpoise.

Throughout Scandinavia, you’ll also get the chance to see some amazing wildlife. While it’s only possible to potentially see polar bears in Svalbard, Norway, you might be able to catch a glimpse of reindeer, moose and ox elsewhere.

Atmospheric cities of Scandinavia

But in Scandinavia, it’s not all about the scenery – there are also the city landscapes. With capital cities like Copenhagen (Denmark), Oslo (Norway), and Stockholm (Sweden), there is plenty to appeal to all kinds of people. Although all very different, the cities are a balance of traditional Scandinavian calm and modern, lively attitude.

You can experience something that those in Denmark call Hygge in the afternoon, before letting your hair down while enjoying buzzing nightlife until the early hours of the morning. Once you find out what the vibrant culture is like in one of Scandinavia’s great cities, you’ll be jealous of the impeccable lifestyle people lead here – and unsurprised why it’s home to so many happy people.

New Taste Experiences

Ever since Copenhagen’s Noma Restaurant was named as the best in the world, people have taken notice of cuisine in Scandinavia. The “Best in the World” title, and the fact that Noma has kept it for years, is largely due to their approach to wild foraging cuisine.

Fortunately for those with smaller budgets, there are more affordable places throughout the region. For a truly Scandinavian cuisine experience, look for restaurants that are serving local ingredients traditionally – such as fermented fish, breads and berries.

With excellent public transport and locals who speak English very well, Scandinavia offers something that’ll appeal to all travellers – it’s easy to get around and explore. And, despite what many people will tell you, it’s possible to travel here on a budget.

Prepare your accommodation in advance (there are loads of places you can camp for free, if your budget is super tight), and research your must-see attractions to book ahead and spread the costs. For more tips, check out this guide to seeing the region without going broke.

It’s Super Accommodating and Accessible!

Scandinavia is well-known for its accessible environment. Countries here are keen to ensure all visitors have every possible experience, including plenty of provisions for visitors with disabilities. As such, Helsinki is just one of the places recommended for those travelling with a disability – whether you’re flying into Helsinki or visiting the Finnish capital by cruise ship.

You can also join guided tours of the city, which can take you to some experiences that have a 5-star accessibility rating. With places everyone can explore and feel welcome, what’s not to love?

The People are Friendly!

Lastly, but most importantly, the locals across Scandinavia are warm and welcoming. Perhaps it’s their surroundings, the great food, or the average amount of holiday days, but whatever it is, people are welcoming to international visitors. They’re content with life, and are happy to share their amazing surroundings with others.

But if you’d rather some time away from people, there’s plenty of room for you to explore on your own in Scandinavia. You could easily pick somewhere remote and not have to see another soul for days, as it’s not densely populated, and gives you a rare chance for valuable alone time.

  1. The scenery really draws me in Emily. Stunning! I also recall the food scene. Even during a short layover, we saw the best 7-11 on earth in Copenhagan. Amazing eats. Like a gourmet store in an airport, fab coffee, amazingly healthy and tasty fare and it was a 7-11.

    1. Hey Ryan, Agreed, the scenery of Scandinavia, is fascinating, the fjords, the forests, the beautiful cities, just fantastic! If I wasn’t already a fan of vikings, just knowing what beautiful land it is would be the draw for me. I’m actually heading to Iceland this September, very excited!!

Shoot me a Comment, I love 'em!!!
