Badlands National Park

Black Hills

West of the Badlands you will find the iconic Black Hills mountain range which rises from the Great Plains. This area plays an important part in America’s history and it is home to the legendary Mount Rushmore sculpture and the Crazy Horse Memorial.

Lake of the Ozarks

A huge reservoir in central Missouri, Lake of the Ozarks is a prime location for action and adventure. Here you can parasail, swim, go boating and more on the waters, or explore the caves, go camping and hike in the surrounding area.

Mark Twain Cave

The famous author Mark Twain made this cave an important place in his novel The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Found near his hometown in Hannibal, Missouri, the astonishing show cave seems like an entirely different world and quite unlike any cave you have ever seen. Whilst in the area, be sure to check out the Mark Twain National Forest which features some of the best camping in the entire Midwest.

The Birkie Trail

The Birkie Trail stretches over 100km through the woods in Hayward, Wisconsin and attracts hikers, runners, cyclists, skiers and adventure seekers from around the world. No matter how you are getting around, you are sure to be amazed at the landscapes and wildlife that you find along the way. Each winter, the world-famous American Birdebeiner ski race is held here, so be sure to keep a look out for this if you are travelling the Midwest in winter.

Adventure Tourism in the Midwest

The Midwest is sometimes overlooked, but it is a fantastic part of the United States and somewhere that features some of its best natural features. These are just a few of the highlights that you can find here, but due to the sheer size of the area, there is much more that is just waiting to be discovered.

  1. I’ve actually never heard of Birkie Trail, though I live south of Milwaukee! I’ll definitely have to look into it 🙂 If you love these activities, Devils Lake State Park is another really popular one in Wisconsin. It has some gorgeous views!
